" FIGURES OF FREEDOM"
This Installation was inspired by Breaking barriers and getting to understand what people feel/think when they interact with the Art that i create.
Changing perspectives on The female body as a comodity slavery, racial discrimination and promoting the equal treatment of
ALLALL people as the
ONE conciousness in society by provoking reactions and opinions, in everyday Namibia people and everyone who comes across this installation. To me, understanding your immediate society as well as having a wider knowledge of global cultures is something that encourages understanding, tolerance and dialogue between people.
After periods of self-reflection, which we all go through, I was drawn to the power of how the Art that i create and how Art in general acts as a social snapshot told through various abstract minds of varied experiences of this
energyONE mind. There is an undeniable need for positive change in the Namibian art scene, to connect to various schools of thought and exchange ideas to inspire others and I want to know how we can go about this. Placing two women, naked and inside their own bubble of "safe" in a bar/lounge space filled with other beings, some there to forget, meet friends and others simply there to connect to Akasha, life force. what happens when we put prices on these womens bodies? does nudity make you feel as though it it an invitation for sex? what is our relationship to our own bodies when we are sround others who are actively taking autonomy?
I want to challenge cultural narratives with the Image on the wall, shift imagery and inspire emotions in a way that traditional political methods alone rarely do in this regards towards these particular issues.
This four month experiment was exhibited at the Loft for over 6months with a documentation of thoughts and comments from people who walked into this space everyday. The art was removed many times to make way for conformity and control during these 6 months, some of the photographs intalled on the table of womens bodies, stolen and torn.
" I am looking to get a general survey of perceptions , feelings and reactions from Namibian people by hanging this Artwork that for me not only speaks a thousand words in a public , Informal gallery space of where people can interact with it for a longer period of time."
Will nudity start being a normal, non-sexual thing for us ALL to accept if we see it out in a “normal” space? A space many of us to come to be vulnerable in anyway?
Does seeing a black female body shown in this way and a white male body tugging at her body provoke some kind of feeling, thought in you?
How can I, as a Namibian nude artist leverage my art to achieve social behavioral change?
This project has two phases, Phase one was a launch opening with a 45min event and a body installation of two naked women in the Loft on Cassinga day , Phase Two will be asecond opening with a musical collaboration with some local Namibian artists and adding on a second photograph.
Please feel free to write down any comments, feelings and suggestion in the guest book below.
